Understanding the physicality of health anxiety

Health anxiety rarely arrives as a thought. More often it arrives as a fluttering pulse at 3am, a tight jaw after a doctor's visit, or a heaviness that settles behind the eyes.
The body is not lying. It is doing exactly what a body is built to do — preparing you for something. The trouble is that the something has no shape. There is no sabertooth. Only the possibility of one.
What helps is not the argument that nothing is wrong. What helps is teaching the body that it is allowed to stand down. Long exhales. Warm water on the hands. A weighted object in the lap. Naming what you feel, out loud, without trying to fix it.
You are not being weak. You are being honest with a very old part of yourself.
